Warm weather is returning and with it comes the annual threat of tick-borne Lyme disease.

Einstein Healthcare Network infectious disease specialist Robert A. Fischer, MD, who has battled the disease himself, responded to your questions about ticks and Lyme disease in a live chat on May 17, 2017. Dr. Fischer covered everything from prevention to detection to treatment.

Dr. Fischer received his MD from Harvard Medical School. He completed an internal medicine residency at Los Angeles County – USC Medical Center and a fellowship in infectious disease at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. He also obtained his BA in physics, magna cum laude, and an MS in applied mathematics.

It’s a shame he’s so dismissive of what people are asking about “natural” and “herbal” remedies. I hear where he’s coming from, but it comes off as very dismissive and preachy. It is increasingly accepted that certain oils do help repel bugs (uh, citronella…but also lemongrass and eucalyptus). Whats tough is weighing the limited information we have about the effectiveness of these repellants with the little we understand about the risks of DEET. Esp. when, as in the case of the actor, there’s a baby involved. So it was a missed opportunity and kinda rude.
