How to Select the Right Sports Bra

By on 05/11/2016

Sports bras have come a long way from their humble beginnings when the first versions were no more than two jockstraps sewn together.

Theresa Toczylowski, MPT, a physical therapist at MossRehab, explains the importance of selecting the right sports bra for runners.

She broke down the options:

Compression Sports Bra

A compression sports bra helps to control the up and down movement of the breasts during activity. This option is best for lighter athletic activity and not preferred for running.

Encapsulation Sports Bra

Toczylowski says that a woman’s breasts move in a figure eight pattern while running, and encapsulation sports bras do a better job of supporting that movement.

Encapsulation Adjustable Sports Bra

Like the encapsulation sports bra, this option is good for supporting the natural movement of the breasts, but they have the added advantage of being individually fitted to each woman’s body.

Four tips for buying the right sports bra for you:

1. Don’t Be Cheap.

Buying a sports bra is an investment just like buying a good pair of running sneakers. Make sure you buy the bra that fits and supports you best.

2. Avoid the Dryer.

To ensure that your investment will last and not shrink, don’t put your sports bra in the dryer.

3. Know Your Sports Bra Size.

You know your bra size, but do you know your sports bra size? Some women may notice that their typical bra size doesn’t work when buying a sports bra. Try it on before making this investment.

4. Run Around the Store.

A good sports bra can only really be tested by doing the activity you’re buying the bra for. So, if you’re a runner, take a quick lap around the store. You may attract a little attention running down the aisles, but it’s the only way you’ll know if that sports bra is right for you.

Regardless of which sports bra you buy, Toczylowski recommends choosing a bra with moisture-wicking materials, which will reduce the risk of chafing.
