These Family-Friendly Activities Keep Everyone Moving

Kids should get at least an hour of exercise or physical activity daily to prevent obesity and to keep bodies healthy and strong. But only about 1 in 3 kids are physically active every day, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the average child spends more than 7 1/2 hours a day in front of a screen (television, video game, computer).

About 1 in 5 children in the United States between the ages of 6 and 19 is overweight or obese— a number that has more than tripled since the 1970s. Childhood obesity is growing at an alarming rate and has both short-term and long-term effects on physical and emotional health.

If you’re looking for an effective way to get your kids to move more, make fitness a family activity. Your kids are more likely to be active if you are and will likely model their attitude towards fitness after yours.

Here are 4 activities the entire family can enjoy together for some heart-pumping, calorie-burning and laugh-out-loud fun:

  1. Act like a kidRemember those games you loved when you were young that kept you running around outside for hours? Play them with the kids for a family-friendly way to be more active. Tag is a timeless childhood game and a fun way to get the heart pumping. There are plenty of other child-friendly active games you can also enjoy, from hopscotch to manhunt.
  2. Get up and dance. Put on your favorite music and move! Nothing says “fun” like a family dance party. This is a great indoor activity on rainy days and can keep kids of all ages entertained for hours.
  3. Find some water. Kids and water go together naturally. Even leisurely swimming gets the heart pumping or you can challenge family members to swim laps or do exercises in the pool. If there’s no pool around, a sprinkler or hose can keep everyone moving—and laughing.
  4. Go on a scavenger hunt. Head to the park or roam around the neighborhood looking for different objects. You can put together a list ahead of time and break up into teams to turn it into a friendly competition.
