jaspan-david_818rPERSPECTIVES: Tell us about your vision for women’s healthcare at Einstein.

DR. JASPAN: The time has come for a major paradigm shift in gynecologic care. In the past, gynecologists have significantly impacted public health through our vigilant use of the Pap smear. Today, we have the opportunity to lead the charge in cardiovascular prevention, genetics screenings for cancer risk, lifestyle intervention to fight obesity, and more.

PERSPECTIVES: How is Einstein approaching this vision?

DR. JASPAN: We’re taking groundbreaking steps to reinvent gynecology—addressing women’s healthcare overall. One such example is cardiology. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women. Recent data tells us there are obstetrical factors that are harbingers of future cardiovascular disease, such as pre-term labor, high blood pressure during pregnancy and placental abruption. As such, we’re able to identify risk factors early, and perform preventative screenings accordingly.

PERSPECTIVES: When—and why—did you choose to join Einstein?

DR. JASPAN: In 1999, directly following my residency, one of my mentors, Dr. Phillip Horn, asked me to join his practice at Germantown Hospital. Germantown Hospital became Einstein. So, in actuality, this was my first job.

PERSPECTIVES: What is your background?

DR. JASPAN: My undergraduate studies were at George Washington University, where I graduated with a BS in zoology. I earned my DO at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where I also completed a rotating medical internship, followed by my residency in obstetrics and gynecology.

PERSPECTIVES: Why should women choose Einstein for their care?

DR. JASPAN: We offer the highest level of women’s health services for every stage of life, delivered with the utmost compassion and respect. While 17 hospitals in the Philadelphia region have closed their obstetrics units over the last 15 years, Einstein remains fully committed to the practice of obstetrics and gynecology, and to providing the best care possible to the community we serve.

Sports, travel and spending time with my family.

I live in Center City, so I have a million. I would say my current favorite is Barbuzzo.

The Philadelphia Flyers. I’ve been a season ticket holder since 1974. I got a better score on the SATs because of (late announcer) Gene Hart’s vocabulary. I still remember when he used the word “stymied.” I had to look it up!

An Officer and a Gentleman

To Kill a Mockingbird

Our go-to-place is San Juan, Puerto Rico.

I just completed over a million meters on my ergonomic rowing machine. I’m very proud of that.

Malcolm Gladwell, author. His books have changed my perspective.
