Meet Einstein Doctor Debra Somers Copit, MD
PERSPECTIVES: Tell us about what you do in your role as Director of Breast Imaging at Einstein Healthcare Network.
DR. COPIT: My role is to ensure that Einstein has a state-of-the-art breast imaging program that takes excellent care of patients, encompasses advanced technology and equipment, and boasts a highly experienced team of technologists and radiologists who specialize in breast imaging.
PERSPECTIVES: When – and why – did you choose to join Einstein?
DR. COPIT: I joined in 1995. My husband and I wanted to come back to Philadelphia – we’re both from here. The opportunity to be a director of a section really appealed to me. And my ties to Einstein go way back. I was born at Einstein and I did my residency here. My father (renowned breast surgeon Robert G . Somers, MD) has practiced here forever. It’s a fantastic hospital full of people who put patient care first and foremost And Einstein is dedicated to the community. For me, it’s a perfect fit.
PERSP ECTIVES: What is your background?
DR. COPIT: I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where I majored in anthropology and minored in Spanish, chemistry and pre-med. Then I attended Jefferson Medical College and completed my internship in internal medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital. I started my residency in diagnostic radiology at Einstein and completed it at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, when my husband Steve – also a physician – was matched with a fellowship in Dallas. There, I had the opportunity to become the first full-year fellow at the Baylor-Komen Breast Center.
PERSPECTIVES: Why should women choose Einstein for their care?
DR. COPIT: What we’ve done since day one is build on a tradition of excellence that started with my predecessor, Harold Isard, MD. He was a pioneer in low-dose mammography – a huge step forward at the time. Einstein has always approached imaging as its own specialty. This truly sets us apart, combined with the teaching we do, the clinical research we do and most important, our commitment to our patients.
