Q: When did you first think about becoming a doctor?
A: As far back as elementary school I told people I wanted to be a doctor, though I didn’t seriously consider medicine until college. I loved studying the intersection of neuroscience and psychology and seriously considered these fields. Along the way, my interests shifted towards public health. I studied global health and found it interesting, but also began to realize I wanted to make an impact on an individual level. Many of my mentors in public health were also MDs who worked with underserved populations. That appealed to me.

Q: Tell us about your medical education.

I’m a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. I completed my residency in OBGYN at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Q: Why did you choose your specialty?
A: As an OBGYN, I care for women from reproductive age through older age. I love getting to know my patients and developing relationships with them. It’s a joy to guide patients through their pregnancies and to delivery. I also love following up during postpartum visits and getting to see the babies again!

Q: What drew you to Einstein?
A: For family reasons, I wanted to stay in Philly. I previously trained in North Philadelphia and enjoyed working with the patient population. Einstein gave me the opportunity to continue working in the same community while also providing a new environment and experience. Einstein has been a great fit. My colleagues are wonderful and the environment is very supportive. Our chair is invested in junior faculty and prioritizes career development and mentorship.

Q: What are your clinical interests?
A: As a new doctor, my clinical interests are still evolving. However, I am very passionate about meeting the needs of the Spanish-speaking community in Northeast Philadelphia. I’m fluent in both English and Spanish from having grown up in Panama. At Einstein Rising Sun, we are in the planning stages of broadening the reach of our Spanish-speaking clinic. We plan to expand upon our existing bilingual services and engage in community outreach to best identify and address the needs of the community.

Q: Do you have a favorite book?
A: With a baby at home, most of my reading involves animals, colors and pictures. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a current favorite.

Q: What is something that people might not know about you?
A: I love scuba diving. My favorite experience was in the Seychelles Islands off the coast of Africa. Traveling is also something my husband and I enjoy and try to integrate into our family life.

Q: Who was your greatest influence?
A: My mom. She was always supportive and encouraged me to pursue medicine as a career. Throughout my life, she also encouraged me to enjoy life outside of school or work and be well-rounded in my interests.

Q: Who is the person you would most like to meet?
A: I would love to meet Michelle Obama. I think she is such an incredibly powerful figure, so dedicated to her causes and the initiatives she started as first lady, such as childhood nutrition and exercise. She is the embodiment of a working mom who is dedicated, hardworking and cares for the underserved.

Q: Do you have a favorite sports team?
A: The Philadelphia Eagles for sure. I live in the city and when they won the Super Bowl, I could hear the crowds on the streets come alive. I went out to celebrate. The energy in the city was amazing.

Q: What is your favorite vacation spot?
A: I grew up in Panama and moved to the U.S. to attend college in Miami, so Miami is a favorite spot. Its strong Latino culture reminds me of home. I still have family there and love the weather.
