Substance Misuse Can Lead to Stroke in Young People

Brain damage resulting from substance misuse has become a growing trend among teens and young adults. In a post on the MossRehab blog, Stroke Rehabilitation Program Co-Director Ning Cao, MD, discusses stroke among young people and the risks, substances, symptoms and chances of recovery associated with this medical issue.

Because of stress caused by COVID-19 and other factors, many people are misusing substances as a coping mechanism. As a result, some are experiencing serious health consequences, including neurological conditions or damage. While early treatment helps to promote a full recovery, younger people often do not seek immediate medical help, instead delaying evaluation and treatment.
